Debora

After nearly 25 years working for San Bernardino County, Debora Dickerson-Sims is preparing to retire in December and embark on her next life chapter that doesn’t involve arriving to the office by 7 am.

Debora, who has served the past 18 years as the Chief Financial Officer for First 5 San Bernardino, recalls that she was instantly drawn to the mission of helping children achieve their best start in life. “I felt that my charge was to make sure First 5 San Bernardino was financially stable today and for years to come.  I will miss the comradery that has been formed and friends I have met at First 5,” Dickerson-Sims concluded.

Prior work experience included positions with Harte-Hanks, Farmers Insurance, CanFibre and SBC’s Behavioral Health Services.  An incredibly well-rounded executive, she brought an abundance of analytical skills, government experience, team building, management and policy analysis to the fiscal arena which she led.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from California Baptist University and a master’s degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix.

“I have been telling Debora for 15 years that ‘I don’t speak fiscal’ and she is so good at explaining fiscal concepts and nuance in a way that makes sense to me,” stated Scott McGrath, deputy director of systems and impact.  “I have learned a lot from her over the years, and I am so happy for her that this day has finally come.  But I will miss the friendship and working relationship we share every day at First 5,” McGrath concluded.

For 17 years Debora has advised and supported First 5 and the Commission with the utmost of professionalism while bringing a user-friendly approach to complex fiscal matters, explained First 5 San Bernardino Assistant Director Cindy Faulkner, sharing that Debora’s dedication to public service and the First 5 mission is impressive.

“She has this special ability to engage with all staff where they always feel comfortable going to her for advice and support,” Faulkner stated. “I will miss being able to “bounce off” ideas to her and in turn, receiving valuable input. Debora is a special friend that I know we will all miss. However, she has fulfilled her service and now it’s time for her to enjoy retirement filled with many excursions around the world. Thank you, our dear friend!” Faulkner concluded.

Several celebrations are being planned to commemorate her years of service.  First 5 San Bernardino will be holding a retirement celebration for Debora following the Commission meeting on December 3, and she will be honored with a Proclamation at the Board of Supervisors meeting on December 9.
